The colonial style we often see reproduced now is often laughably more elaborate than the original decor items. In the early days of the country colonial style was dominated by relatively crude do it yourself work. The early made do with what they had. They could not drive over to Macy's to shop. Many colonial decor items were home made . . . often even the house! The simplicity and Norman Rockwell like charm of something like a pierced tin pie cabinet is one reason why the colonial style has returned for at least four major revivals. After the craftsman movement ran it's course around 1925 or so it was superseded by a mass of affordable colonial style homes with their own unique charm. At least one of the famous craftsman designers moved almost entirely away from craftsman and over to colonial style. Maybe it is time for another revival of the colonial style. The early colonial style houses were comfortable and well built, many of which still stand today even though constructed in the 1700s or earlier. For more colonial style ideas visit this site.
